Beijing Opera, also known as Ping Opera and Jing Opera, is one of China's national treasures and is the most influential opera genre in China, distributed throughout the country, with Beijing as its centre. Beijing opera has a standardised form of artistic expression in all aspects of literature, performance, music and stage art. There are more than 1,300 traditional plays in the repertoire, with more than 300 or 400 being performed regularly. Beijing opera has spread throughout the country and has been widely influenced, and is known as the national opera. The Peking Opera performance system, named after Mei Lanfang, is regarded as the representative of the Oriental theatre performance system and one of the three major performance systems in the world. Beijing Opera is an important expression of traditional Chinese culture, and many of its artistic elements are used as symbols of traditional Chinese culture. In May 2006, Peking Opera was inscribed on the first national list of intangible cultural heritage by the State Council, and in 2010 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (Roster).
